4 BELLS FOR FREEDOMgeeft een klank aan de belangrijke boodschap van vrijheid als fundamentele waarde voor Amsterdam en daarbuiten.TijdslijnJuli, September t/m 19 Oktober 2025 Op 1 Januari 2000 werd de vierde klok, genaamd 'De Vrijheid' in de Zuidertoren in Amsterdam ingewijd. Deze klok, met het opschrift "Behoed de Vrijheid boven al, O Amsterdam, opdat zij u behouden zal", vormt de inspiratie voor het participatief multi-disciplinaire muziekproject 4 Bells For Freedom. Tegelijkertijd refereert de titel naar de Four Freedom toespraak van F.D. Roosevelt uit 1941, waarin hij vier fundamentele vrijheden benadrukte: vrijheid van meningsuiting, vrijheid van godsdienst, vrijwaring van gebrek en vrijwaring van vrees. 4 Bells for Freedom (4BFF) heeft als doel het stimuleren van een breed maatschappelijk gesprek over vrijheid in Amsterdam en daarbuiten. Het project biedt een podium voor gesprekken, discussies en workshops over de betekenis en grenzen van vrijheid in onze huidige samenleving. Citaten van bekende (o.a. F.D. Roosevelt, Anne Frank, Linda Nooitmeer, Baruch Spinoza) en nog ongehoorde stemmen opgehaald uit buurtinteracties komen uiteindelijk samen in de speciaal voor dit project gecomponeerde vrijheidskantate ‘Cantica Libertatis’ uitgevoerd door jeugdkoor Nieuw Vocaal Amsterdam, een Spoken word- artiest en multicultureel ensemble. De uitvoering vindt plaats op 4 oktober 2025 in de Zuiderkerk. Er is een speciale licht sculptuur van Rob van den Broek voor de uitvoering ontwikkeld. Het project is ontwikkeld ter herdenking van 80 jaar vrijheid na de Tweede Wereldoorlog, wat samenvalt met de viering van het 750-jarig bestaan van Amsterdam. 4BFF geeft een klank aan deze bijzondere dubbele viering in Amsterdam en herinnerd met zijn klokkengeluid dagelijks eraan om vrijheid ‘ te behoeden en te behouden', opdat de stad open, tolerant en vrij kan blijven. Eerbetoon en inspiratie‘De Vrijheidsklok’ was een cadeau aan de stad Amsterdam in het jaar 2000 en werd gerealiseerd door een gezamenlijke actie in de Nieuwmarktbuurt op initiatief van toenmalig gemeenteraadslid Auke Bijlsma. 4 Bells For Freedom is daarmee ook een eerbetoon voor Auke Bijlsma (1946-2012). Als een van de aanvoerders van de actiegroep Nieuwmarkt speelde Auke een cruciale rol in het historisch behoud van de binnenstad. 4 BELLS FOR FREEDOMgives voice to the important message of freedom as a fundamental value for Amsterdam and beyond.Timeline15th of July, September to 19th October 2025. On 1 January 2000, the fourth bell, called “De Vrijheid” (Freedom), was inaugurated in the Zuidertoren in Amsterdam. This bell, with the inscription "Behoed de Vrijheid boven al, O Amsterdam, opdat zij u behouden zal" (‘Protect freedom above all else, O Amsterdam, so that it may protect you’), is the inspiration for the participatory multidisciplinary music project 4 Bells For Freedom. At the same time, the title refers to F.D. Roosevelt's Four Freedoms speech from 1941, in which he emphasised four fundamental freedoms: freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want and freedom from fear. 4 Bells for Freedom (4BFF) aims to stimulate a broad social conversation about freedom in Amsterdam and beyond. The project provides a platform for conversations, discussions and workshops about the meaning and limits of freedom in our current society. Quotes from well-known figures (including F.D. Roosevelt, Anne Frank, Linda Nooitmeer, Baruch Spinoza) and unheard voices gathered from neighbourhood interactions will ultimately come together in the freedom cantata “Cantica Libertatis”, composed especially for this project and performed by the Nieuw Vocaal Amsterdam youth choir, a spoken word artist and a multicultural ensemble. The performance will take place on 4 October 2025 in the Zuiderkerk, Amsterdam with a décor of light sculptures by Rob van den Broek. The project has been developed to commemorate 80 years of freedom after the Second World War, which coincides with the celebration of Amsterdam's 750th anniversary. 4BFF gives voice to this special double celebration in Amsterdam and, with its chimes, reminds us daily to “protect and preserve” freedom, so that the city can remain open, tolerant and free. Tribute and inspiration “The Freedom Bell” was a gift to the city of Amsterdam in 2000 and was realised through a joint initiative in the Nieuwmarkt neighbourhood on the initiative of then city councillor Auke Bijlsma. 4 Bells For Freedom is therefore also a tribute to Auke Bijlsma (1946-2012). As one of the leaders of the Inner-city action group, Auke played a crucial role in the historical preservation of the city centre.
