Bells for Freedom is a spiritual map and reminder for the people of Amsterdam about how to live together in a city with its rich history of freethinkers. The idea was sparked by the inscription of the bell ’The Freedom’ from the Zuiderkerk (South Church) ‘Behold freedom above all, oh Amsterdam, that freedom may protect you.’, is at the heart of the project ‘4 BELLS FOR FREEDOM’ and serves as a reminder for the citizens of Amsterdam to remain tolerant and inclusive towards diverse cultural populations from all social classes. The new composition by Marion von Tilzer for Youth Choir and chamber ensemble is based on F.D. Roosevelt’s 4 Freedom Speech from 1941. It will be premiered on the 4th of October 2025 at the Zuiderkerk during the festivities 80- years Freedom. The year 2025 also marks the 750th year of the city Amsterdam, which is an extra special moment in the history of the city.
